The L Word summary

The L Word is the intimate story about the lives and loves of a group of lesbian friends living in Los Angeles. The show has received a lot of praise for it's brilliant storylines and the portrayal of the lesbian community. The L Word is created and executive produced by Ilene Chaiken, who also serves as a writer on the show. Other executive producers include Steve Golin and Larry Kennar.

season 1
Set in West Hollywood, the series features Bette Porter (played by Jennifer Beals) and Tina Kennard (Laurel Holloman), who have been a couple for seven years and want to have a child. Their next-door neighbor, Tim Haspel (Eric Mabius), faces a major life change when his girlfriend, Jenny Schecter (Mia Kirshner), moves in with him after she graduates from the elite University of Chicago. Jenny's alter-ego Sarah Schuster's name is a play upon Zarathustra, a frequently-referenced character of Nietzsche's, who is frequently discussed in her developing affair with Marina Ferrer (Karina Lombard). Marina is the European owner of the trendy neighborhood café, The Planet, which, as the group's hang-out, serves as a focal point for the show. Marina is part of Bette and Tina's circle of friends, which also includes Shane McCutcheon (Katherine Moennig), an androgynous, highly sexual hairstylist and serial heart-breaker; Dana Fairbanks (Erin Daniels), a professional tennis player who is still in the closet and torn between her career and finding love; and Alice Pieszecki (Leisha Hailey), a girlish, bisexual journalist looking for love in any way she can. Lives, however, begin to change as Bette's musician half-sister Kit (Pam Grier), who is recovering from alcoholism, returns to her life (jazz fans probably notice Kit Porter's name as a reference both to Eartha Kitt and Cole Porter); and as Jenny begins a discreet relationship with Marina, which challenges everything she knows about herself.
season 2
ntroduced in the second season are Carmen de la Pica Morales (Sarah Shahi), a confident DJ who starts a relationship with Shane; Helena Peabody (Rachel Shelley), the daughter of a wealthy supporter of the arts, who later becomes Tina's temporary love interest; and Mark Wayland (Eric Lively), a documentary filmmaker who moves in with Shane and Jenny. Mark makes them part of his latest documentary, by setting up hidden cameras in the house to videotape them. After Jenny discovers a few of his videotapes — including one in which Carmen confesses to love Shane — Mark takes the cameras down, and, after an attack of conscience, confesses about his voyeurism. Jenny allows Mark to stay at the house, but treats him negatively for the remainder of the season.
In the second season, the characters are wracked with new discoveries. After Bette's illicit affair with a carpenter (Candace), Bette and Tina break up, but slowly renew their relationship, though making it an open one. Tina becomes pregnant after a second insemination attempt, which she keeps secret from Bette, fearing another miscarriage. Meanwhile, Tina begins seeing Helena Peabody, after receiving a large grant from her to help underprivileged kids, while the Peabody Foundation oversees the California Art Center. Ruthless, controlling, and conniving, Helena Peabody appears to be on a mission to ruin Bette's life, which comes to a head when Bette loses her job at the CAC in the second season finale. In the midst of all of this, Bette's father, Melvin (Ossie Davis), dies after revealing that he was suffering from prostate cancer.
season 3
Set six months later after Tina gives birth, she and Bette raise their baby, whom they name Angelica (Olivia Windbiel), while suffering more marital strife (including Bette losing her job at the CAC, and showing little interest in finding a new one). The couple appears to be more distant than ever; Bette seeks partner support from an overwhelmed Tina, who starts looking for the protection Bette cannot give her outside the home. Bette's love seems to have less and less effect on Tina, who rediscovers her male attractions.

Elsewhere, Dana is back with Lara, causing Alice to become obsessive. After finally being able to get over with the breakup, Alice has to deal with tragic news: Dana has been diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer, which could lead to her death. Dana becomes emotionally abusive to Lara, who then leaves town for a cooking school in Paris, France. Alice takes up the job as Dana's caregiver. At the same time, Max Sweeney (formerly Moira) begins the process of becoming a man with dubiously obtained testosterone injections obtained from Billie Blaikie (Alan Cumming), Kit's new manager for the Planet, a bisexual man who becomes sexually fixated on Max's androgyny. This drastic transformation alters Max emotionally, leading him to turn his relationship with Jenny into a story of potential abuse.
As the season advances, stories entwine. As Dana's condition worsens, Alice keeps a bedside vigil at the hospital where Dana is admitted. Bette, who is still in Olympia, Washington, finally leaves her silent retreat without any enlightenment and ends up receiving wanted wisdom in the place she would least expect. Back in Los Angeles, Jenny's ex-husband Tim makes a reappearance on the scene for a visit. He has re-married and is expecting a child with his new wife. Jenny and Tim spend some time together with their respective couples, but the dark story of their past ends up ruining their meeting, making Tim leave town once again on a sour note. Lara tries to reach for Dana, but apparently she has taken too long. Carmen reveals an infidelity to Shane; Dylan and Helena settle their lawsuit and break up out of court; Tina delegates even more fatherly duties to Henry; and nobody gets to say goodbye to Dana, who ultimately loses her cancer battle alone while Alice is out taking a walk.
A lot of emotions are confronted upon Dana's death. Her fiercely conservative parents, whom are still trying to ignore and deny Dana's sexual orientation, prepare a ceremony in which her friends are excluded. Alice, who is upset about this setup, steals some of Dana's ashes and decides to arrange a funeral of her own with her friends. They spread the ashes on a waterfall at a tennis camp Dana loved, and where she and Alice first met during an interview. At the same time, Tina and Henry continue settling in, and Bette decides to visit a gay civil rights lawyer (Jane Lynch) in order to obtain the full custody of Angelica. Shane, on the other hand, is severely affected by the loss of her friend Dana, and decides to propose marriage to Carmen. Carmen accepts, agreeing to marry Shane at the waterfall. Meanwhile, Max gets a job offer at a technology center where he had been rejected as Moira, which makes Jenny angry and leads them to more conflict. Dylan returns Helena's check and the footage of the sexual harassment setup; and Lara comes back from Paris, only to find out she is too late. In the midst of the loss she is suffering, Lara reaches out for Alice and they share an emotional moment that evolves into a secret relationship.

scribble

how do you document real life when real life is getting more like fiction each day? hmmm, Dear book, this is another day in my life. A life is like a book. A book is like a box. A box has six sides. Inside and outside, so, how do you get to what's inside? How do you get what's inside, out?
i remember when one of my friends told me that im so much addicted on putting my thoughts on writing, or for this matter, blogging it. it was only last year that blog was introduced to me. all by myself. the first one was at friendster (which i, by the way, opted not to do blogs there anymore, hehehe), then i also have xanga accnt, and then this one, my blogspot. and i might stay here for a long time :) but even before last year i was already fascinated on writing my thoughts. well, not that im like a poet or something, i am actually a frustrated writer. sobra... simula pa nun highschool! and in college, i remember scribbling anything that i can think of whenever its my vacant, just like that. and i was happy. and i am happy with what im doing now as well. hmmm, my blog is different from my journal, huh? yeah, i guess so... i got my journal by the way at starbucks :) just this year. so technically, my thoughts had been organized just this year, wahahahaha! make sense... anyways, i blog almost everything. no labels, no limits, no categories... anything i can think of. anything that caught my attention. with regards to my journal, well hmmm, its an everyday journal. so its kinda different, ayt? its more personal, for that matter. and most importantly, nobody can read it, wahahahaha...
happy writing...
happy blogging...
admit it, its therapeutic, *wink*

breakaway

Grew up in a small town
And when the rain would fall down
I'd just stare out my window
Dreaming of what could be
And if I'd end up happyI would pray (I would pray)

Trying hard to reach out
But when I tried to speak out
Felt like no one could hear me
Wanted to belong here
But something felt so wrong here
So I prayed I could break away

[Chorus:]
I'll spread my wings and I'll learn how to fly
I'll do what it takes til' I touch the sky
And I'll make a wish
Take a chance
Make a change
And breakaway
Out of the darkness and into the sun
But I won't forget all the ones that I love
I'll take a risk
Take a chance
Make a change
And breakaway

Wanna feel the warm breeze
Sleep under a palm tree
Feel the rush of the ocean
Get onboard a fast train
Travel on a jet plane, far away (I will)
And breakaway

[Chorus]

Buildings with a hundred floors
Swinging around revolving doors
Maybe I don't know where they'll take me but
Gotta keep moving on, moving on
Fly away, breakaway

I'll spread my wingsAnd I'll learn how to fly
Though it's not easy to tell you goodbye
I gotta take a risk
Take a chance
Make a change
And breakaway
Out of the darkness and into the sun
But I won't forget the place I come from
I gotta take a risk
Take a chance
Make a change
And breakaway, breakaway, breakaway

freedom

"When everyone wants to relate to you as that one slice of pie that they’re seeing for an hour a day—-I mean, that part is true and real, that’s not a con. But, you know, there’s twelve pieces in a pizza. There are other parts—there is the political part, the gay part, the depressed part. There’s the overweight part. There’s the happy part. There are all different parts, like everyone."

Pinoys most courteous of Asians

Manila Standard Today, Philippines - Jun 25, 2006

Pinoys most courteous of Asians, says ‘Digest’

FILIPINOS are the most polite urbanites in Asia, ranking 21st out of 35 in a global courtesy test by Reader’s Digest, the magazine said in a statement.

Surprisingly, New Yorkers scored 80 percent and topped the 35-country test, while Mumbai in India ranked 32 and dead last—just a point ahead of 34th placer Bucharest in Romania—though Asia got the lowest scores overall.

Reader’s Digest sent undercover reporters from its editions in each country to assess politeness in their most populous city.

In every location, they staged scenarios to see if people would hold open a door, say “thank you” after making a sale in a shop, and help someone pick up papers dropped in a busy location. Points were awarded for polite responses, and the results for each city were tallied and compared.

“This was the world’s biggest real-life test of common courtesy,” said Conrad Kiechel, editorial director of the magazine’s international editions.

“Our researchers conducted more than 2,000 separate tests of actual behavior, producing results that were both revealing and thought-provoking.”

The test was not a scientific survey, but it provided a fascinating snapshot of behavior in the countries tested, the magazine said. It gave a score of first to the most courteous and 35th for the least courteous.

For the purchasing test, Manila scored 65 percent with a global ranking at 23rd.

But don’t expect a door to be held for you while in Manila as only 25 percent of the people tested bothered to even slightly hold the door ajar, giving the city a global ranking near the bottom at 33rd.

If you drop papers on a street in Manila, chances are someone will help you to pick them up. Filipinos scored well at 55 percent, giving them an impressive global ranking of 5th place.

“I wanted to help but I was hesitant because I was thinking what if it was just another modus operandi of swindlers or pickpockets,” says Elizabeth Yap, a self-employed 37 year-old.

Albert Magbagay, 18, a student who passed the dropping papers test, says: “It’s innate for me to be helpful and courteous—there was even a time when I helped an elderly cross the street. It really matters when your parents raised you up with the proper values.”

But in Asia, eight out of nine cities finished in the bottom 11. Every city except Hong Kong finished in the bottom 10 in the rankings for holding doors open, and no door-holding test had a success rate higher than 40 percent.

Many Asians don’t include door-holding in their notions of courtesy. “How can we measure someone’s value simply by whether they hold a door open?” asked a student in Manila.

“The three tests each looked at a different aspect of how people relate to each other, with the door-holding test designed to see if individuals are aware of the people around them,” said Jim Plouffe, editor-in-chief of Reader’s Digest English Asian magazine.

“Throughout Asia, we found that people were oblivious to the fact their actions affected those around them.”

Courtesy in shops was particularly lacking in Mumbai. When a female reporter bought a pair of plastic hair clips at a convenience store, the sales assistant turned his back on her as soon as she paid. Asked why, he said, “Madam, I am not an educated guy. I hand goods over to the customers, and that’s it.”

Moscow and Bucharest ranked as the least polite European cities. When a woman failed to hold a door in Moscow, she replied, “I’m not a doorman. It’s not my job to hold doors. If someone gets hurt, they should be quicker on their feet.”

Zagreb residents were the world leaders in helping with dropped papers. One man insisted on helping despite having arthritis and a bad back. “I always help someone in trouble,” he said.

Shop assistants were especially polite in Zurich and Stockholm. In both cities, they thanked the Reader’s Digest “customers” in every store where they visited and made a purchase.

In So Paulo, even petty criminals were polite. As Reader’s Digest bought a pair of cheap sunglasses from a trader, shouts rang out that the police were coming. The market turned out to be illegal. The merchant gathered up his goods to flee, but not before saying “thank you.”

17th happiest people

Manila Times, Philippines - Jul 14, 2006
editorial

17th happiest people
THE news that a survey shows the Philippines being the 17th happiest country on Earth is worth a smile.
The study was done by the British think tank New Economics Foundation whose Happy Planet Index covered 178 countries.
To rank 17th happiest among 178 jubilant, sad, ecstatic and nail-biting countries isn’t bad at all.
Guess which country is the happiest in the world? It’s the tiny South Pacific archipelago of Vanuatu, followed by Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominica and Panama.
The unhappiest country is Zimbabwe in Africa, topped only by Swaziland, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Ukraine.
The Happy Planet Index combines life satisfaction, life expectancy and environmental footprint—the amount of land required to sustain the population and absorb its energy consumption.
Life satisfaction must be high in the Philippines. According to a survey, Filipinos are among the world’s top shoppers. They are the most patriotic in the world, according to another study. A survey done by Reader’s Digest reveals we are the most courteous in Asia.
Filipinos are living longer, too. Women tend to outlive the men, though.
We don’t have much land but we are geniuses at reclaiming land from the sea. Squatters are experts at taking over public and private property. The homeless will sleep anywhere sunset finds them.
Professional syndicates are able to manufacture ownership titles to grab the lot you spent your life’s savings on. Many houses contain multitudes of families. Hovels are rising over Manila Bay, riverbanks and along esteros. The population grows exponentially as land shrinks. We have to build upward.
Filipinos are not difficult to please. A bowl of instant noodles sustains most poor families. Sidewalk food is a 24-hour business. Movies and TV help us pass the time with ease. Prayers and humor make Pinoys resilient. Disasters, tragedies and epidemics are an occasion for jokes. The extended family provides a safety net for the jobless. If the fates are unkind, it is God’s will.
Seriously, many good things are going for us. We are the 14th most populous country in the world. We hold elections regularly. The media cover and interpret the news courageously. Scientists have declared the Philippines the world center of marine biodiversity. Manila is the cheapest city for expatriates. The market economy is buoyed by sound fundamentals. Our more than seven million overseas workers make us world citizens. We have produced world champions.
Our democracy is flawed but it is working. We are assured the economy is on the takeoff stage. Peace is upon us because the talks in Mindanao are moving and the government will crush the communist insurgency in two years. The Catholic Church regularly advises the President on the affairs of state. The political opposition, fractured and leaderless, keeps the administration honest.
Next year, we beat Vanuatu.

i love this book! heartbeat of the filipino lesbian. it is complied and edited by anna leah sarabia. you wont probably believe that i have finished reading this book without owning one. i didnt even borrow it (there's no one that could lend me anyway). i was still in college, that was 2001 i guess, when i dropped by at national bookstore sm manila. its my favorite pastime when ive got nothing to do on my vacant hours. i saw tibok and started to read it. and of course, i couldnt finish it at once so i am remembering the page and promised to myself that ill see you again tomorrow. hehehe... weird as it may seem, but it really is true. i cannot afford to buy a book that time (a book causing more than 200 bucks matters to me before). thats why when i got the chance and all means to buy it, i didnt had a second thought.

beautiful leisha hailey

Come Down To Me by Saving Jane

Words fall out of my mouth And I can’t seem to trace what I’m saying Everybody wants your time I’m just dreaming out loud, I can’t have you for mine and I know it I just wanna watch you shine. Tripping up on my tongue, It’s all over my face and I’m racing Gotta get away from you Burning all the way home, Try to put it to bed but it chases Every little thing I do When the light falls on your face, Don’t let it change you When the stars get in your eyes, Don’t let them blind you. You’re beautiful Just the way you are And I love it all Every line, and every scar And I wish that I could make you see This is where you ought to be, Come down to me. Spell it out in a song, Bet you never catch on to my weakness I’m singing every word for you. Here I’m thinking I’m sly Then you’re catching my eye, and just maybe You’re thinking what I’m thinking too When you see it on my face, Don’t let it shake you I know better than to try and Take you with me

june

month of june is over and we're starting the second half of the year. well, what could i say? sobrang bilis d ba? for all we know, we are again putting some christmas decors and lightning fireworks, 2007 na. and if i am going to assess myself, what i have been through, or simply what happened to me on the first half of this year, i can only tell you one word darling ----- spontaneity.

i can still remember my thoughts before year 2005 ended. i always daydream what's gonna be my future look like, what do i really want, and how i can have it. and so i told myself that everything will start from next year, 2006. i planned, and i can even picture it in reality. i must say that most of the time i have a strong sense of imagination. but then i realized there are things that are not really meant for us, no matter how i tried. its really fucking frustrating you know. wanting something you cannot have. and through the years, i got lots of them, that's why most of the time, i would always say that what kaLoi wants kaLoi gets, as long as i can.
of course i would never stop planning ahead. being a bigtime dreamer myself? come on, who can stop me?! nobody and nothing can stop me achieving my goals. be it short term or my long term goals. its my inspiration, i get my drive from it. being a self-confessed paranoid-goal-oriented freak, i must say. but we need to keep in mind that we have always experiencing life's spontaneity and i know ill still have lots of it. it is great to plan for the future but along with it, learn to embrace changes and unexpected things as well.
let's enjoy every moment of our lives

who is she?

i forgot when it was exactly happened... i was on my way to the office, still on a jeep within cainta premisses... the jeep stopped over infront of the plaza (sa bangdang bayan) to get some passengers... and there she was standing... then suddenly she is now with me inside the jeep... she sitted on the place opposite to mine... just the perfect place, the perfect angle... i can clearly see her... her long black hair, her 2 dimples located on the lower jaws (juz like with mikee cojuangco), her white flawless skin, her perfect set of teeth, her cute face, her 3 piercings on right ear... hmmm...
who is that girl? why i havent seen her before (as if i may be able to know all the people in cainta! hehehe)? why she doesnt even look familiar? arrrrgh! and why i didnt have the courage to ask her name?! fuck!
we are living in a small world... i know i could still see her someday... and when i do, ill take all my chances.

Pacquiao keeps belt

MANILA, Philippines (AP) -- Manny Pacquiao gave the home fans plenty to cheer about Sunday July 2, battering Mexico's Oscar Larios to claim a unanimous decision and retain his WBC International super featherweight title.
In the same arena where Joe Frazier and Muhammed Ali slugged it out in the "Thrilla in Manila" 31 years ago, the 27-year-old Pacquiao constantly showed off his speed and power in the 12-rounder, knocking down Larios twice while raising his record to 42-3-2.
Most analysts had expected Pacquiao to come out strong and look for an early knockout, but Larios appeared to win two of the first three rounds. The Mexican sprinted out to start the third, and a strong left hook had Pacquiao reeling on the ropes and looking close to going down.
But Pacquiao withstood the rally and opened a cut over Larios' left eye later in the round. Flurries of punches left the 29-year-old Mexican looking slower as the match wore on.
Pacquiao took control in the sixth, putting together several effective combinations that appeared to hurt Larios and reopen the cut. The crowd went crazy as a right hook dropped Larios (56-5-1) to one knee early in the seventh.
There had been speculation that commercial endorsements which Pacquiao landed after beating Erik Morales in January -- along with a late-night lifestyle and the shortest training period of his career -- might erode Pacquiao's skills and leave him running out of gas if the fight dragged on.
But Pacquiao demonstrated unexpected stamina. He was still throwing punches with sting at the end, knocking Larios down with less than a minute to go. The Mexican shook it off and got back up, and Pacquiao tried in vain to finish him off.
The judges scored it 117-110, 118-108 and 120-106, all for Pacquiao.

On the undercard:
Gerry Penalosa (50-5-2, 31 KOs) battled his way to a ten-round decision over Tomas Rojas (22-9, 14 KOs) in an action packed, seesaw battle. Penalosa hopes to challenge for a title later this year. Score: 97-93, 98-92 and 98-93.
Jimrex Jaca (26-2-1, 11 KOs) and Hector Javier Marquez (28-17, 21 KOs) battled for seven rounds until a severe cut over the eye of Jaca forced the doctor’s stoppage. The cut was caused by an accidental headbutt and thus the fight went to the scorecards. Winner by TD7, Jimrex Jaca. All three judges scored the bout 60-53.
Late replacement Michael Domingo (25-14-3, 11 KOs) showed surprising power, battering Alejandro Felix Montiel from pillar to post for the better part of six rounds before the referee finally stepped in and stopped the contest at 1:04 of round seven.
